Have you ever wondered what would happen if you stuck nitroglycerin, the active component in dynamite, on your penis? In this article, we’ll share with you about nitroglycerin cream, which is a new treatment for erectile dysfunction that you probably have not heard of.
The fun fact is Alfred Nobel, the guy who started the Nobel prizes, made his fortune figuring out how to stabilize nitroglycerin and then using it as an explosive. He called it dynamite, but nitroglycerin is used in medicine for other purposes, such as in patients who have chest pain from heart issues.
What it does is relax the smooth muscles in the vessels and opens them up so that there’s more blood flow. In the penis, it does a similar thing; it relaxes the smooth muscle in the cavernosal tissue, which leads to two things:
- increased blood flow and
- decreased leakage out of the veins
What’s the onset of action?
Usually, within about 5 minutes, 50% percent of men are able to get an erection, and then within 10 minutes, 70% of men can get an erection.
Now, compare that to Viagra, which a lot of times you have to take it about 30 minutes before you’re planning to have intercourse.
How long does nitroglycerin cream last?
We’ve heard from our patients that it lasts about 10 to 15 minutes. Usually, that’s not an issue because the median duration of intercourse for most men is somewhere less than 5-10 minutes, and so that time should be fine.
However, if you’re in the lucky cohort that is able to sustain a little bit longer than that, it is possible to reapply the nitroglycerin cream after an hour.
What are some of the side effects?
This is one of the big selling points compared to taking something like ED pills because those medications you take orally and end them throughout your entire system, whereas the nitroglycerin cream tends to stay fairly localized to just the penis.
When looking at it in the studies, there’s an 8% chance of headaches and then about a 1% chance of nasopharyngitis, which is just swelling of your nasal cavities or giving you the sensation of a stuffy nose.
One thing that you may wonder is: does this stuff have to be wiped off because it might transfer to your partner?
Well, it has a fairly fast absorption but if you just want to be safe after you apply it before you start intercourse, be sure to just wipe it off.
Some warnings about this cream are:
If you are taking other medication such as nitrates for angina or chest pain, you have to be really careful when using nitroglycerin cream because the additive effects of this stuff can lead to very low blood pressure.
Also, you’ve probably tried other phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitors such as Viagra Cialis or Levitra. Taking these in combination with the nitroglycerin cream can lead to low blood pressure potentially as well as something called priapism which is having an erection for more than 4 hours. It sounds awesome, but it’s actually not because your penis will start hurting immensely. So, it’s a good idea to wait at least 48 hours between your last dose of Viagra or Cialis before trying the nitroglycerin cream.
This also applies to people who are using intracavernosal injections with substances such as TriMix – you should definitely wait at least 48 hours between the last injection and using the nitroglycerin cream because it may increase your risk of priapism.
So, there you have it – this is what happens when you put a potential explosive on your penis – your penis doesn’t explode, but it may give you an erection.
